The Aran Islands lie at the mouth of Galway Bay and are reached from Galway by ferry. Local attractions in Galway include St. Nicholas Church which is the oldest medieval parish in continuous use in Ireland. The oldest sections of the church date from 1320. Legend says that Christopher Columbus prayed at St. Nicholas before departing on one of his voyages in 1477.
