The ridge of the Great Smokey Mountains form the boundary between Tennessee and North Carolina. They are a subrange of the Appalachian range and a part of the Blue Ridge Physiographic Province. To the West is the Cumberland Plateau.
North Carolina is the only bordering/boundary state east of Tennessee. This is because Tennessee was originally the western counties of North Carolina. It became the Southwest Territory in 1790 and a state in 1796.
