It's not the M6.

The longest is the A1(M) that is 273 miles long. The highest is the M62 (around junction 22, A672) and the lowest is the M1. The lower the road number, typically, the longer it is (except the A38, which I believe is the second longest trunk road in Britain).

Although it's pushing it a bit to call it a motorway, it runs from London to Newcastle upon Tyne, with breaks in between. This beats the M6's 212 miles.

Contenders are the A57(M) in Manchester (across the M602), the M275 (Portsmouth, take the M27), the M271 (junction 3 of M27), the A167(M) in Newcastle, the A58(M) and A64(M) in Leeds, the M181 in Scunthorpe (off the M180) and the A3(M) near Winchester (not the same as the M3, which also goes to Southampton). Of all of them, I believe the shortest is the A57(M).

The answer, as usual, is a matter of definitions, in particular how you define "motorway" and "Europe", and in this case also whether you consider purely national numbering or international (E-route) schemes.

Two contenders:

1) longest E-route

2) longest continuous at least 2x2 lane dual carriageway in an E-route

2) longest national motorway within a country in Europe

1) the E40 is without doubt the longest E-route, stretching from Calais in France, via Belgium, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, Russia and Uzbekistan to Ridder in Kazakhstan, a total distance of over 8000km, of which at least 4000km is located inside Europe. However this route will not qualify as a motorway over its entire length.

2) Although more difficult to be certain, the E45 is a likely winner. It runs for 2867km as full motorway from Villa San Giovanni in Southern Italy via Austria and Germany to Fredrikshavn in Northern Denmark. Note that it also runs in Sicily and Sweden, but requires a boat crossing to get there.

3) the longest national motorway is probably the German A7, which runs for 962km from the Austrian border near Füssen to the Danish border near Flensburg.

Once again, note that slight changes in definitions will get radically different answers, and that roadworks are building new motorways all the time, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe. Even with the same definitions the longest roads will change over time.

Why is the M6 motorway so busy?

The M6 motorway is the main conduit between England's second city (Birmingham) and the heavily populated north-west of England including the cities of Liverpool and Manchester as well as the only major route for road freight between England and Scotland. This very heavy traffic is further constrained by a mostly 3-lane motorway which has frequent junctions that contribute to accidents which cause all too frequent delays.
