The Marine Corps Birthday is November 10th, 1775. Various units will celebrate the birthday at a Ball on days around this date, such as on Saturday the 8th this year, when Marines will wear their Dress Blue uniforms, or Evening Dress in the case of senior officers, to a formal dinner/dance. Ladies will wear evening gowns. There is usually a cake-cutting ceremony following dinner where the first piece of cake is presented to the oldest Marine present, and the second piece presented to the youngest Marine. A message from the Commandant is read. Dancing usually follows. Traditionally, Marines around the world pause on November 10th, wherever they may be, to remember the legacies of Marines before them.

It is also noteworthy that the following date, 11 November, which is a federal holiday (Veteran's Day), began as a celebration of the end of WWI (as Armistice Day). Marines from the Fifth and Sixth Marine Regiments are credited by many as major factors in the victory of the Allies, where they earned the title as Tuefulhunden or Devil Dogs from their German counterparts during the battle of Belleau Wood.
