The Spanish explorer Francisco Vásquez de Coronado-with a group of soldiers, missionaries, and African slaves-marched into the Rocky Mountain region from the south in 1540.
French fur traders Pierre and Paul Mallet discovered the range in 1739 at the headwaters of the Platte River while journeying through the Great Plains, becoming the first Europeans to report on this uncharted mountain range. Local American Indian tribes called them the "Rockies."
Lewis, Clark and York thouroughly explored and described the range in 1804.
They were called such by local tribal people. The actual namer is unknown.
