Well, honey, back in the day, the Upper East Side was fancy as hell, filled with the high society folks who could afford the finer things in life, like silk stockings. So, naturally, the area got the nickname "Silk Stocking District" because it was where all the wealthy, well-dressed folks strutted their stuff.
