In 1969, TIME magazine reported that their wealth was estimated to be about $400 Million. Joe Sr. invested heavily in Manhattan real estate and made huge profits. There is some oil money as well and, of course, the heirs have invested similarly as Joe did. By JFK's 45th birthday, he had only been granted access to about 50% of the money in his trust as arranged by Joe Sr. The TIME article is a good read; just keep in mind it was written in 1969. At a conservative interest rate of 7% over 40 years, that $400 million would have grown to $6.52 Billion without adding anything to the principal. Save your money.

One of the most speculated reasons for this is that Joseph Sr. (Father to JFK) sold bootlegged alcohol during the prohibition of the 1920s and earned much of the family's money.
