How many characters are on Super Smash Bros. Brawl?

There are 35 character options, but as Zelda can transform to Sheik and Samus can become Zero Suit Samus, there would be 37 characters in total. Ivysaur, Charizard and Squirtle are not counted as three different characters, as their character is Pokemon Trainer.

Okay theres 8 original characters, 7 newcomers in melee, 10 secret characters in melee, 27 newcomers plus secret characters in brawl adds up to 52 super smash characters in all this doesn't regard any bosses or secret bosses such as giga bowser. If it regarded bosses as playable characters that would make 63 characters but you can't play any of the bosses except giga bowser. I believe there are 36 characters in SSBB
