you get the marshal badge and get your picture taken.then your trade it in the trade and barter.you ask the man to trade the pan for your portrait he says yes and you get the pan actually this is not how you do it at all

You need to swap for it at the Trading Post in Dusty Gulch (you can also swap for an oil can, but only one at a time).

First go to Rock Ridge (left side of town) and talk to the rancher, who says one of her calves is missing. She gives you a lasso, and you go onto your horse, riding left from Rock Ridge and following the hoof prints until you find it. Use the spacebar to throw the lasso to catch the cow, and bring it to the ranch (which is on the map). Go back to the rancher and she'll give you an old saddle, which you can trade at the Trading Post.
