Unlocking

You can unlock other cups and more characters that have their own karts. Locked characters: Diddy Kong, King Boo, Daisy, Baby Daisy, Toadette, Dry Bones, Birdo, the Mii character, and, Rosalina.

Locked Cups: Leaf Cup, Star Cup, Lightning Cup, Special Cup, and the Mirror Cup

Items

• If you get bananas, green shells, or red shells, hold them behind you so that you will not spin out when another shell hits you.
• For the red shell, make sure that the person in front of you (that the shell will hit) does not have a banana, green shell, or red shell held behind them. It will be a waste of your shell, as they will be protected.
  • However, if you have more than one red shell and they only have one item behind them, shoot one red shell to eliminate their defense, and shoot the other one to cause them to spin out.
• Drop bananas and the fake item boxes in areas like where there are genuine question boxes, on ramps, or on acceleration patches.
• Don't hold fake item boxes behind you.
• With the storm cloud item, try to hit an opponent to pass it on. The storm cloud will cause you to temporarily accelerate, but it will cause you to shrink should you fail to pass it on.
• Use all manual accelerating items at opportune moments (mushroom, golden mushroom, star); likely when there is a shortcut where you need it or a straight track, as it can be difficult to control and you may fall off the track. It's also a great idea to utilize these items to cut across grass/sand- just make sure that it won't cause you to 'fall' off of the track.

Other

• Learn how to drive on manual and how to drift. This allows for greater control and boosts around corners.
• Do 'tricks' off of jumps by shaking the Wii remote. This will cause you to do a flip in the air and accelerate upon landing.
• If you are driving a bike, do 'wheelies' for greater speed by sharply lifting the remote.
• Know the tracks and where the shortcuts are. Know how these shortcuts can be used (e.g. if you need a mushroom to successfully use it)
• Avoid POW blocks by doing what you would normally do for 'tricks'.
• Know which karts/bikes/characters work for you.
• Know which driving method you prefer (e.g. remote + nunchuck, remote, wheel, classic controller).
• Practice! Familiarity with the tracks, characters, and karts/bikes go a long way.

In Maple Treeway, the leaf piles sometimes give you mushrooms that lay on the floor - you can use them well if they aren't in an awkward place to reach.

Also, Throwing turtle shells at the ant-like creatures on some of the roads gives you mushrooms too.

Plus in manual, to hold an item behind you, you press left or right on the control pad.

On Mario Raceway, near the end of the lap, there is a green tube. If you ride on the side of it, you can do a trick at the edge and it will give you speed boost!
