Most kayaks are built for one person, but there are kayaks made for 2 or even 4 people. Sit-inside kayaks typically have a cockpit which fits just one person. There are double kayaks with two cockpits. In these double kayaks, the person in the back provides propulsion while the front person provides both propulsion and steering. Sit-on-top kayaks are built for one or two people. Because they don't have small cockpits, people can sit on top of them in any arrangement desired. However, comfort and safety generally dictate that the kayak be used as intended except for short excursions in calm water.

A one person kayak, or K1, is usually around 2.5 to 3 meters long. A two person kayak, or K2, can be 0.6666 times again as long as a K1 or it can be up to 2.5 times as long as a K1. Four person kayaks or K4s can be up to 3.5 times as long as a K1 or only as little as 2.75 times as long as a K1.

Depends on the style, whitewater kayaks are rather short and stubby while an open water kayak can be over 5 meters long.
