Three of the major characteristics of a civilization are stability, longevity, and significant cultural achievement. Without stability, a people cannot develop a distinctive character and culture. Without longevity, a people's distinctive character and culture cannot grow and develop through the various maturation stages possible. Without significant cultural achievements, a people will necessarily be borrowers from the developed civilizations in its near or far vicinity.
