Simon represents purity and the goodness that is within human beings. In fact, many people believe that he is meant to symbolize Jesus Christ because he was also pure and good. Near the end of his life, Simon tries to tell the other boys that the "beastie" they are worried about is actually just a dead parachutist. He is unable to do so because the other boys murder him while under the frenzy of their hunting dance. Also, Simon tries to help Ralph build shelters for the boys. Additionally, Simon likes to keep to himself. He often goes off to various parts of the island alone.
Simon's mission in "Lord of the Flies" can be understood as seeking truth and understanding in the face of chaos and violence. He embodies qualities of kindness, spirituality, and connection to nature, ultimately serving as a symbol of goodness and a contrast to the savagery that consumes the other boys on the island.
Simon is used in the story to be the archetype of religion or goodness in the world. William Golding was trying to explain that although he felt man was innately evil, he also believed that they had goodness. Thus, Simon is used to express Golding's beliefs about man, and also to symbolize goodness in society. As a religious allegory, he is used to symbolize Christ. Hence the name: Lord of the Flies, which in an old language is Beezlebum, which means Satan. His confrontation with the Lord of the Flies is symbolic of Jesus Christ's Harrowing of Hell.
