Actually, when fish are caught fresh from the water they do not have the 'fishy' smell we often associate with seafood. The fishy smell comes from bacteria that start acting on the flesh of the fish soon after it is caught.

When we experience the same fishy smell on ourselves, it's usually around a females genital area because there may be an overgrowth of many of the same type bacteria that like a moist environment, like the fish. Men that have not been circumcised and do not retract the foreskin to clean it daily (which is recommended) also end up with the same fishy smell. In most cases a good diet and exercise keeps your immune system strong and fights off much of this bacterial growth, plus basic hygiene like washing with soap and water often helps too.

For women, if the odor becomes very strong, it would be a good idea to get checked by your doctor because is may be a sign of a more serious infestation and that could lead to reproductive problems.
