Neutering is the removal of the male testicles. Certainly men can be neutered just like any male animal, but if they are neutered (castrated), they will not be able to reproduce and they will not be able to have sex. When a man is neutered (castrated) he loses his ability to have erections (for the most part) and the penis shrinks considerably in size. These men are called eunuchs and they become more docile, just like castrated male animals, which some women might appreciate, especially if their husband or boyfriend is abusive, but it's illegal to castrate or neuter a man unless it's a medical necessity. There are some men who actually desire castration, though they probably have a body identity disorder. There is a website entitled "eunuch.org" where these men discuss their desires to be neutered or castrated.

Females are at high risk of cancers and uterus infections as they get older

Mammary cancer, ovarian cancer, and in male dogs, rectal complications, prostate cancer and many other cancers and infections.

It does reduces aggression in male dogs, because they no longer produce testosterone.

It is a very good thing to do. It may cost you money now, but will save you lots of vet bills in the future.

To control the pet population. Many dogs get killed because their owners didn't spay or neuter them. If your animal gets pregnant, some people can't afford it and leave their dog somewhere thinking it can live on it's own. Neutering your dog will reduce the risk of animals with destroyed futures and life in a shelter.

Also, if your dog is male, it reduces his aggression. Because the male reproductive organ it removed, so it the large amount of testosterone running through your animals body! They won't be so aggressive and your helping the community!

Go and get your dog spayed or neutered! :)

Tough question, but these are the best answers:

1. If they have a show quality, friendly, sound dog that is going to be shown, titled and bred in the future. Breeding correct dogs in a conservative way is fine, as long as you are responsible about caring for, and placing puppies.

2. If they want their (male) dogs to develop correctly, and not have problems with thyroid or certain cancers. *However* only do this is you will NEVER breed a poor quality or mix-breed dog!

3. If people want their females not to have housebreaking problems when they're four or five, and to develop better.

4. If you have a giant breed. Giant breeds are occasionally neutered, by pet owners, as young as 6months. DO NOT DO THIS!!!

Be careful when choosing why, or why not to neuter.

A good choice for females is to get them spayed after 1yr, especially giant breeds.

If you wish for your dog to develop well, but would rather not have to run around after the dog to prevent irresponsible breeding, you can wait till your dog is 2 or 3, and then get them spayed or neutered. This is much better for the dog, although it may be a little more troublesome for you.

But remember, if you are responsible, you will understand your dog's anatomy, and be able to control unwanted/unneeded pregnancies.

Is five years too old to neuter a male dog?

Nope, as long as he doesn't have any problems, and he's not a sight-hound, he should be fine. However, castrating dogs over 10yrs of age is riskier, since they do not function as well as younger dogs. 5yrs is perfectly fine, and you will not have any problems in the future like some people do that neuter their puppies are 3 or 4months.
