Stress from exams would suppress the immune system (possibly due to cortisol release of the adrenal glands) allowing the patient to be more susceptible to infection. If the patient was taking exams it would mean he has had exposure to a large number of other students, so airborne transmission would be plausible.
2. What secondary infection problems should be monitored?
a. Secondary bacterial invaders such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae may cause pneumonia. It can be monitored by an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) rapid test (15 minutes) called Directigen FLU-A.
3. What is the preferred treatment for this disease?
a. Treatment of symptoms is the only option. One of which is administration of Tamiflu (a neuraminidase inhibitor) that shortens the duration of the illness.
