A boy named Stanley Yellnatts is put in a camp for criminal kids for stealing a pair of shoes, which he didn't actually steal. He gets to the camp and meets Zero. After many events in the camp, Stanley runs away to find Zero. Then they come back to the camp and find a chest with treasure in it that happens to belong to Stanley. The camp is shut down and Zero finds his mother.
A boy named Stanley goes to a place called Camp Green Lake where there is no lake. This institute is a place for troubled boys who have committed crimes and Stanley is one of them, after being accused for stealing a famous persons shoes that he did no do. His time at Camp Green Lake is hard and difficult but he finds ways to break past his hardships and survive him time at CGL. After his friend Zero, a boy he helped learn to read runs away, he goes looking for him. When he finds Zero they then have to survive the dark, brown desert by eating whatever they can find, which includes onions, 'sploosh' and drinking rain water. After they survive the night they return back to CGL where they find Stanley's lawyer waiting for them, who decides that he has not been treated within the guidelines during his time there. He also asks if Zero can come with him, which in turn leads to the closure of Camp Green Lake.

When a pair of famous shoes assumingly "fell from the sky" and landed on Stanley's back, knocking him over. It turns out, that near the end of the story, it was actually Zero who had stolen them from homeless shelter. He had no idea that they were famous because he couldn't read the label that said "Clyde Livingston".
