This poem is about all men being brothers -- that all people are essentially the same.

First stanza:

  • All people are the same beneath their uniforms/clothes.
  • All walk on the same kind of land and will all be buried in it.
  • All are fed by the harvest and the harvests are ruined by war

Second stanza:

  • Our hands are the same and we all do the same work.
  • They sleep and wake as we do.
  • Love is strong enough to conquer all people -- all people are the same

Third stanza:

  • When we are told to hate others, it's ourselves we are hating.

Fourth stanza:

  • When we fight each other, we are defiling the earth we all live on and the air we all breathe.

UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD- we are the children of the same father who is god. therefore we are the citizens of our mother earth, so we should not divide ourselves by the boundaries of our countries.

INTERNATIONALISM- the world is one family. it tends to dismantle man-made barriers that stands between one nation and another. By having an international outlook, men and women will enjoy equal status at all times.

RENOUNCE WAR- we must shun hatred and warfare. the poem basically suggests that warfare is expensive but peace is priceless. we should also bear in mind that men all over the world are our brethren therefore we must give up hatred, violence and warfare.

One should keep in mind that no human beings are distant, unfamiliar or far off. Underneath any colour of any

soldier's uniform belonging to any nation, another human being breathes the breath of life just like any other person.

The land that even our political enemies walk upon is the same earth like our own native soil that one fine day in

different timings we shall all be laid to rest.In times of war or peace, even our international foes undergo the same

trials, the way our native population experience. They too, like us, enjoy the bright sunshine day, breathe the same

air from the atmosphere and drink the same water available on earth to survive. All people feed abundantly on the

prosperity of agriculture and farming and may even starve to death in times of war and food shortage during long

drawn winters if not stored appropriately. They also house more of the hard-working people with busy hands to

survive a decent income and living. They toil in the same manner that we do.Our enemies also have the same kind

of eyes the way we do, eyes that see, sleep and wake. We both have physical strength that can be won by brute

force and the strength of the heart that can be won by love. Every population of every nation in this world recognizes

and understands the true essence of the common life of people. So let us all remember that whenever we are

brainwashed and compelled to hate and kill our brothers, we only deceive, disown, betray and condemn ourselves

to the curse of plaguing blood-thirsty arms against each other. When an imminent war between two hostile nations

breaks out, it is our mother earth that we pollute to such an extent to create living hells of dust and fire that will

violate the purity of our surroundings including our thoughts and actions. Both hostile nations will suffer the same

fate of shedding innocent blood. The air gets polluted on both the countries. To prevent such a catastrophe,

we should begin with ourselves to accept that 'no men are foreign and no countries strange'

The poem is obviously a strong plea for universal brotherhood. It underlines the fact that the people of different countries have same physical, mental & emotional experiences. Their fate is the same. They are in no way different even though they wear different clothes & speak different languages. Nobody should be viewed as stranger & no country foreign. The poet emphasises the futility of hating those who belong to other countries. When we wage war against others, we only defile our own earth. The dust & smoke caused by war weapons pollute the very air we all breathe. Thus we should never fight with others. We should remember that all of us are the children of the same God. When there is no essential difference between us & them, where is the room for hatred, violence & war?

THEME:

This is a symbolic poem. The world is threatened with war, misery and poverty. But all these have failed to crush man's love for pleasure . Children enjoy the sweet spray of the juice forgetting all about the misery thy live in .
