In general, it could be said that the continents driftabout on the earth. There are large "pieces" of the lithosphere that are called tectonic plates, and these are thought to move in response to the movement of magma below the plates.

Plate tectonics is becoming more well understood as we continue research, and the movement of the plates accounts for a number of observations we've made about the way the land masses are arranged, and how they might have looked in the past.
