Sociopathy is believed to be a combination of inherited and environmental factors largely centered around early severe abuse or neglect. It is difficult to say for sure, since in the nature of things the children of abused parents tend themselves to be abused, regardless of the pathology involved.

The greatest protection would, obviously, come from removing the sociopath from the children's lives. Of course, this is not always possible...nor, indeed, desirable in some cases.

If you are asking this in reference to yourself, you can relax. The fact that you are worried about it is a sure sign that you are not a sociopath, as their defining characteristic is massive unconcern about such things.

Without a doubt ! Be it nature or nuture - I know two brothers who display or the traits of a sociopath, as does the father. All are successful in their chosen fields and financially secure, yet they still manipulate others, extracting money from them - probably alot to do with how they succeeded in the first place! They have all 'conned' the women in their lives, wives/mother/girlfriends and are all incapable of fidelity. They share the same traits of operating from a secure relationship, where they totally control their partners - isolating them from friends/other family members, while having extra marital affairs from the safety of their marriages, often targetting friends' partners and even ex- in-laws. They paralyse their own children, because all displays of support and love are false - the other face is crucifying criticism. They have no loyalty. When found out, which they all are, from time to time, they display no remorse and actually have been known to say "well, I HAD to lie to you to have any chance of continuing the relationship' - they display absolute rage and self-righteous indignation if challenged and no remorse for any pain they have caused. The job of any 'normal' person is not to understand or help them (they laugh behind the backs of loved ones who attempt this and are contemptuous of all displays of understanding - thinking 'more fool you if you let yourself be walked on) but to protect yourself against them - the only way to do this is to cut them completely out of your life. These people destroy lives and take no responsibility for their actions or behaviour. They are hard to spot. However, if you think you are being conned and FEEL you are being conned - trust your instincts - YOU ARE! (THEY WILL TELL YOU YOU ARE PARANOID!). BEWARE.

If the behaviour of a parent is that of a sociopath then yes it can sometimes be inherited. Children copy their parents, they rationalise the behaviour as normal and so they replicate it.

The jury's still out about nature or nurture.

Some research shows it is genetic and linked to untreated ADHD in children.

It appears to be 50% heredity and 50% environmental.
