There are water craft that look like stern-wheeler steamboats which still navigate the coasts and rivers of the modern world. However, one such "steamboat" is known to operate with large diesel engines, not steam, a case which may be common to other "steamboats." Interestingly, while not strictly stern-wheelers, many large, modern seagoing vessels are powered by steam, so in that sense, they're steam boats. The steam is superheated and under tremendous pressure and drives a high speed turbine. The power output of the turbine passes through a transmission, and then connects to the drive shaft and propeller.
