Best Answer

Yes they are. This is because they are a lipid. Lipids consist of oils, waxes and fats which are not soluble in water hence the term hydrophobic (water fearing)

Why are lipase that are found in saliva and in the stomach not very effective at digestion?

because triglycerides are hydrophobic

Why triglycerides that are very hydrophobic are soluble in acetone which is a polar solvent?

Acetone is only a weak polar solvent.

Are triglycerides amphiphilic?

No. Because the polar hydroxyls of glycerol and the polar carboxylates of the fatty acids are bound in ester linkages, triglycerides are nonpolar, hydrophobic molecules, that are essentially insoluble in water.

Is triglyceride hydrophobic?

yes

Are triglycerides polar or non-polar?

Yes. Like carbohydrates, lipids also contain oxygen, hydrogen and carbon. But unlike COH, they have much fewer oxygen atoms. As a result lipids are said to be saturated with hydrogen atoms making the bonds between atoms non polar convalent. This means that lipids do not disolve in water. This property is know as being hydrophobic

In what form are dietary lipids found?

triglycerides

How does phospholipid differ from triglyceride?

Phospholipids are a class of lipids, and a major component of all biological membranes, along with glycolipids, cholesterol and proteins. Phospholipids consist of a glycerol molecule chemically bonded to 2 long fatty acid chains and a phosphoester through a process called condensation. Phospholipids are amphipatic (has a hydrophillic region and a hydrophobic region) due to the hydrophillic phosphoester and the hydrophobic fatty acid chains. Triglycerides are the chemical form in which most fat exists in food as well as in the body. They're also present in blood plasma. These consist of a glycerol molecule chemically bonded to 3 long fatty acid chains via a process called condensation. Triglycerides are hydrophobic as the long fatty acid chains are hydrophobic as they are far too long to react with water.

Is cholesterol hydrophobic or hydrophobic?

Cholesterol has many hydrophobic side chains and a single hydrophilic side chain. Because it contains both hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups, it is amphipathic.yes cholesterol Hydrophobic , choestol not soluble in water

Is vitamin A hydrophobic or hydrophilic?

hydrophobic

What is hydrophobic and how do you determine if a molecule is hydrophobic?

Hydrophobic means that the molecule is repelled by water. You can tell if a molecule is hydrophobic by the way the atoms are arranged.

Does nonpolar means hydrophobic or hydrophilic?

Nonpolar means hydrophobic.

Are lipids hydrophobic or hydrophobic?

All Lipids are hydrophobic: that's the one property they have in common. This group of molecules includes fats and oils, waxes, phospholipids, steroids and cholesterol.
