The benefits of space exploration are knowledge and maybe one day we will be able to build space craft that can mine the ore of asteroids, thus lowering the prices of metals. also it is possible that one day we will need a "safety net" because of a horrible accident or natural disaster (ex. asteroid hitting earth)

One benefit of using robots instead of people for space exploration is that you don't need to send food or water along, and you don't have to bring the explorer back to Earth. That saves substantially on fuel requirements. One drawback is that a robot is less flexible than a human in dealing with unexpected circumstances.
They never used Explorer. It was built as a replica to allow people to see inside a Space Shuttle at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida. It has since been moved to Houston.
The first American satellite (space ship) was Explorer I, launched in 1958.

The only Space Shuttle named Explorer is a full sized replica/mockup/model of the Space Shuttle at the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida. Many space missions of varying types have been named Explorer.
