Since a hearth is the entire stone or brick structure lining the fireplace, it would be very difficult and costly to change on an existing fireplace. Similar to any type of renovation, you can surely find a contractor to get it done, but it will be a big project. An easier way to modify the look and feel of the hearth would be to put a new fireplace grate, screen, and hearth rug to "dress it up" a bit and change the look. Below are a couple links to example ideas

The hearth is NOT the entire lined fireplace. The hearth is the area that sits outside the burning area of the firplace. It can be replaced or modified or even removed entirely fairly easily.
