Saying that an autistic child has lack of empathy is a myth. It's not true when some doctors have said they don't know what love is and how to care for other people. Autistic individuals know empathy, and they know how the other person feels. They do care.

∙ 9y agoNo, the main problems Autistic people face are with social skills and social communication - an Autistic person can be social, they can enjoy being social, and they can mimic neurotypical social behavior, but they will still always struggle. Autistic people have to put a lot more effort into even the most basic social interaction as they have to be always aware of their behavior and actively think about their body language in a way that neurotypical people do not - this means that socializing is tiring for Autistic people. Autistic people also struggle to maintain friendships or make new friends.

Is grief harder to deal with when you have autism?
Obviously everyone is different and you can't compare grief of one person to another.With that said however, Autistic people have higher affective empathy so tend to feel grief deeply and especially when they see it in others. However Autistic people have lower cogitative empathy so aren't always able to express empathy or their emotions to others, some people assume this means Autistic people do not feel empathy or grief and can give Autistic people a hard time for this or pressure to present a certain way can make Autistic people feel uncomfortable.

Kids with autism can 'freak out' when other kids cry, all autistic people are different. Autistic people have lower levels of cogitative empathy, meaning that they may struggle to recognise emotions in others or acting appropriately in response compared to neurotypical people, however autistic people have significantly higher levels of affective or 'true' empathy compared to neurotypical people. This means that autistic people can be very sensitive to the emotions of others, when they are able to recognise others are upset it can make autistic people very upset too.

Autism is a neurological difference so it effects all emotions a person has. Autistic people can often be more emotional than neurotypical people because Autistic people have higher empathy than neurological people (even if Autistic people can't always show such emotions).

Your autistic child may not recognise their name as their name. Many autistic people are disconnected from how they are percieved by others, not all Autistic people accept the name given to them as representitive of them.
