The legality of dating a cousin varies by jurisdiction, as laws regarding consanguinity (the degree of kinship between two individuals) differ between countries and even between states or provinces within a country. In some places, it may be legal to date a cousin, while in others it may be prohibited.

From a biological perspective, it is generally considered less than ideal to reproduce with close relatives due to the increased risk of genetic disorders that can result from consanguineous relationships. However, dating a cousin without the intention of having children does not pose the same level of risk.

It's important to note that regardless of the legality or perceived acceptability of dating a cousin, it's always a good idea to consider the potential social and familial implications of such a relationship. It may be viewed as taboo or frowned upon in some cultures or communities, and can potentially strain familial relationships. Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to pursue a relationship with a cousin is a personal one that should be carefully considered.

Every cousin is related to you by blood.

You can date anyone you want, as long as your parents don't object. Having sex with a close cousin in not accepted in many, but not all, places.

Marrying a second cousin or more distant relation is legal in all western jurisdictions and even marrying a first cousin in legal in about half the states of the USA.

If you are not related by blood, you are not actually cousins. Many people will refer to them as cousins, but unless you share a common grandparent (or some level of great grandparent), you are not really cousins.

If two people are first cousins there is a bigger chance of birth defects. I don't know what study said otherwise. Not only birth defects but they could be more likely to develop medical issues (that commonly run in the family) throughout their life. Two people from the same gene pool share common genes obviously! If some of those shared genes are recessive (meaning unexpressed) there is a 1 out of 4 chance the child will inherit the active gene.

Recent scientific studies said that even if the two people were cousins that there should be no birth defects. How true this is I am not sure, studies are studies.

In most states of the US, sexual relations or marriage with your first cousin (any person who shares a common grandparent with you) is unacceptable.

Several states including Colorado do not have this restriction.

You may, however, raise a few eyebrows.

yes you can date your cousin but that's pretty weird. imagine if someday your kid and your brother or sister's kid dated- that's what it'd be like for your mom/dad and their brother/sister (your cousin's parent). also, i dont know if it's illegal to marry your cousin but i know for sure that it is unsafe; it decreases biodiversity and increases the chance that your kids will have recessive diseases. an example of this is when the royal families in places like England were all marrying their relatives to keep their "blue blood," but eventually practically all their kids had hemophilia and similar diseases. so to answer your question, sure go ahead and date your cousin but i don't recommend it.

It is not a good idea to date someone you are biologically related to as close as a third cousin. The reason is that if you have a baby the closer the biological connection the higher probability any children you have will have birth defects.

It is not "bad" to want to date anyone. If you want to have sexual relations with a cousin, that is more that going on a date, and some people are uncomfortable with the thought. However, even so-called blood-related cousins can marry -- second cousins everywhere, and first cousins in about half the jurisdictions of the US and I many other places as well.

What is a blood relationship?

A "blood relationship" means people related through a bloodline. A woman and man marry but are not related before marriage nor do they come from the same bloodline. But, you and siblings born to your mom and dad are related by bloodline. Your mother's siblings (your aunts and uncles) are direct bloodline, and the same with your father's siblings. But you do not have a blood relationship to the spouses of your mom's or dad's siblings. If a cousin is related on your dad's side, your mom and your cousin are not related by blood, because your cousin is not your mom's relative. Same with a cousin on your mother's side; they are not related by blood to your father.

Are third cousin's blood related?
