Many people suffer from depression because of the many things they have to deal with. Not only can you feel pressure to do well in school and study hard from people such as teachers and parents, but also have relationships, puberty and friendships to deal with. You may also worry that their problems will be spread around as "gossip" which can be very emotionally straining. Try to imagine a celebrity's problems being "exposed" to the public. This is very hard for teenagers to deal with. On top of all this they must think about their future and what they want to do for the rest of their life. This can cause great stress and often this stress can get on top of them and lead to depression. If you are older worrying about work or children is common. You may worry about the way your children are growing up, or about your influence as a parent. If you are worried about work you may be stressed from all the jobs you are expected to do. Sometimes this can lead to suicidal thoughts and can be very difficult to deal with. If you or anyone you know is in this position it is important to seek professional help. Tell an adult you trust or if you are older a close friend and they may be able to arrange this for you. You could alternatively arrange it yourself. Sometimes just talking about your problem can help you learn how to deal with it by yourself. You should try to learn to focus on the good things in life such as the people you love and wipe out the bad things that are causing the depression. Its very tough to learn and can take some time but in the end should be worth it. Try to remember that how you feel is up to you. If you think you are depressed and feel down then you will be. If you think you are happy and have many good things to look forward to in life then you will be happy.

Bipolar Disorder is not a disease - you cannot catch it or carry it or give it to someone else. There does seem to be a genetic trait that you inherit, so that if your ancestors were bipolar, you will have a bigger chance of having it yourself, but it is a chance and not a certainty.
Psych Central has a self assessment quiz for bipolar disorder. The quiz will help determine if someone needs to see a healthcare proffesional. The quiz is in no way a replacement for seeking professional healthcare advice.
