Exposing the cell to a hypotonic solution can cause the cell to take on water and explode. Ideally, tumor cells take on the water and explode. Thus, there are fewer cells available to cause a recurrence of the tumor. Studies do not show that this is necessarily an effective technique, but in theory it would work.

∙ 15y agoSince sterle water is a hypotonic solution, it will cause lysis (bursting) of any remaining cancer cells that may have become dislodged by surgical excision. A hypotonic solution will enter a cell since the solute (dissolved solids) concentration is higher inside the cell than outside the cell. This causes the cell to swell, and then burst, since water can go in but not leak out.
