In Shane, Shane is the main character and protagonist of the book. Shane is a mysterious man. He is dressed differently from the other men, wearing a black hat, boots, and a belt. Shane quickly becomes Joe's friend and Bob's hero. Shane never let any of Joe's family be hurt or killed. He has experience to quickly deal with dangerous or threatening situations to the Starretts. Fletcher is the antagonist of the book. He is a horrible person who wants to buy land from the farmers. Flecter gets angrier when Joe talks with the other farmers to not sell their farms. Soon after, when Shane comes around Joe brings measures to violence and murder Joe and Shane.

Marian Starrett is a female character in the book. She is Joe's wife, Bob's mother, and the family cook. She also falls in love with Shane but doesn't lose love in Joe. Marian tells Shane that she needs him and that it is great having two bonds. Marian also likes that Bob has another role model. Bob Starrett is the narrator and reveals the story and characters. Bob father is his hero, but when Shane comes along he became his most important role model. Shane also teaches Bob as a role model that a man does not enter a fight and take responsibility for his actions.
