It depends on the model of PVR. Most supplied by cable companies have no video or audio inputs and can only record cable programs. If your PVR has video inputs and can record these sources, you can connect your N64 with a composite video cable and stereo audio cable and record your games.

The HD PVR has to have an input that accepts the outputs of the Nintendo 64. Coming from a retro gaming background, I know how valuable it is to want to record and store your favorite video games. As written above certain PVR do not allow recording, that is why I use the Newelectronx HD PVR. Follow the tutorial that I included to help you see how to connect it. The tutorial I found online has pictures. You can use it to help you connect any HD PVR that has AV inputs on it. You don't have to use the PVR that i used.

How can you use a HD pvr and use your headset?

If you mean to record your voice, I'm sorry but there's no way to record your voice with the HD PVR. The HD PVR and other recording devices will not pick up your voice spoken into the headset. The only way to do this is to record your voice at the same exact time as the HD PVR with a program like Audacity on your computer. This allows you to edit your voice's volume compared to the the gameplay volume. I record with an AVerMedia Game Capture HD and a Blue Yeti Microphone at the same time and combine them both with Windows Live Movie Maker before tweaking it with Adobe After Effects. It's a lot of work but worth it.

How do you record what happens on a TV based video game like a Nintendo 64 while playing it without using a camera but rather directly recording what happens on the TV screen?

I would recommend using a recording device not a camera because the quality of the recorded picture might turn out slightly better. There are many ways to record the screen. You can use a dvd recorder, vhs recorder, hd pvr, or any digital recording device. I personally use a newelectronx hd pvr to accomplish this. Why did I choose this method, well because I also record retro games and the newelectronx hd pvr connects to both my Nintendo 64 and my playstation and xbox. There isn't really much to using it. You connect the n64 to the hd pvr by the video and sound cables and then press the record button. If you want to view what you recorded then you don't need computer - just push the play button and viola the stuff you recorded pops back up on the same TV screen. It records and plays simultaneously as you play your video game so you can switch back and forth without hassle. Look around there are many recorders for this type of stuff - just make sure the one that you get can connect to the n64. See the related links for more info on this with pictures and videos.
