The reason why no other bookseller anywhere in the world will entertain national book tokens online, is because of the high fees involved for the retailer when dealing in book tokens! If the shop sold you a discounted book online and you paid with a book token, then they would be pretty much certain to make a loss on that sale and no business can survive like that. The way First Bookshop gets by, is they sell these books to you at the RRP (cover price) no discounts apply. However as their post & packing is free, this is not really a bad deal at all. They accept the new plastic book token gift cards and also the discontinued old fashioned paper vouchers (but those have to be posted in to them by you, where as the new type can be just debited online by them).
