A very interesting question! One of her songs seemed to poke a sort of sad fun at religion- this being the Three Bells or (Trois Cloches). The song is in a sense a biography of a man who is, so to speak, hatched, matched, and dispatched in the course of the song. He is married, but we never learn the name of his wife, or the cause of his death ( many years thereafter) if somethng like this came out in the USA, ( the song was later recorded by ( the Browns)- well, you can imagine the response ( sordid song pokes fun at religion) There were people ( let us face it she died in the heart of the Cold War) people who seized upon this song and clattered ( Edith Piaf is a Communist!) It is known she was devout on the surface, had many occasions ( death of a child, temporary blindness, death of a husband..) to seek the solace of religion. as far as I know she believed in God, but the song mentioned casts some doubts- it is light years removed from, say ( Amen) or even ( My Sweet Lord).
Edith Piaf was 4'8'' which to me is really short!!
