Like everybody else, he had problems and setbacks that he had to overcome. His parents divorced and his father died when he was a college student at USC. He was bankrupt twice, once because his son-in-law squandered his fortune, which caused the breakup of his daughter's marriage. He had to rebuild after each of these financial setbacks. He had a lung removed because of cancer. He had 2 divorces and a separation from his third wife.
Everyone's life has ups and downs but when asked about his life, he always said he felt very lucky and that he had a great life.

∙ 13y agoI'm amazed you had to ask. He was a son, brother, father, husband, uncle, nephew. He came from a financially restricted home to become one of the best loved and respected public figures of all time. He was a sucker for a sad story and generously helped the underdog when he could. He is one of the few people in history that spoke his mind even when it made him a target of criticism and sometimes ridicule. And he was patriotic to his last breath.
