Kimono's have never been traditional wear. They are for Westerners "good Sunday clothes." They use them for weddings, proms, etc. But, people sometimes wear them around cities though. A kimono is something you receive when you're twenty in Japan you're parents have saved a lot of money to buy you a special dress.
