most "dry" corn will pop. it is actually the moisture trapped in the corn that makes it pop. the corn is heated turning the moisture into steam. onces the steam builds enough pressure the corn pops. commercial popcorn is conditioned for optimum moisture levels and is grown to pop in a certain way.

Yes. Some types pop bigger and fluffier than others. These days we have figured out what types are best for popping. That is the kind that is used. Although any kind of corn will pop.

Each corn kernel has a minute amount of moisture contained within it. Under intense heat, the moisture turns to steam, expands and explodes the kernel into what we know as pop corn.
