A child is aware that an adult has a different body than themselves, so it does not change what the child sees. The body shape of the doll is adult, but it is neutral enough to be what a child sees in her own mother.
Another point to consider in the debate over the doll is that it was designed in the 1950's. At that point in time, the doll was not radically different from the fashion models of the time. Those young women had larger breasts and tiny waists and while the doll is somewhat exaggerated, it is more in keeping with the fashion industry of the time. As an historical relic, it is rather accurate.
The Mattel Corporation is sensitive to the debate and have made dolls that were more anatomically correct during the course of this debate. Unfortunately, even with all the hubris surrounding this issue, the iconic Barbie doll is the one that children are still given. The "fatter" doll never took off as a selling point.
In the end, children will play with what appeals to them. The Barbie doll is an inexpensive toy that lends itself to imagination and fun, and in the end that is what matters.
