No, compost bins do not smell if proper materials are recycled and proper procedure is followed, but yes, they will if improper or proper materials are not aerated, layered, moisturized, and turned adequately. Compost bins yield a dark-colored, fresh-smelling, nutrient-rich product with correctly aerated, heated, moisturized carbon- and nitrogen-rich materials.

Yes, compost can smell like wet mud. The smell is typical of dark-colored, fresh-smelling, nutrient organic material produced in compost pits. The compost which is made in compost bins, containers, heaps, or piles tends to smell like fresh, healthy soil.

This largely dependent on what stage the compost is in.

You will have to get your hands dirty for this.

Test the compost to see what temperature it is.

If it is still hot, or warm, it is not ready.

It needs to be cold.

It should look like pure soil.

It will have a Fresh Soily, good, smell.

I would not recommend smelling it during earlier stages.

Compost is the result of a massive microcosmic Eco System in the dirt.
