Tiny edit: there are also many makers who construct fursuits as a job. If you're looking for someone to make your specific character for you, this is a great place to look! (Many of them have their own websites). Be prepared with a reference and plans to budget for a while, though.

Of course! The furry fandom is perhaps the most open and welcoming subculture out there (non-furs are even welcomed at regional meets, at least they are here in the UK). I have met convention-goers who are not furry but simply art collectors or curious individuals.
However, you would be expected to be tolerant and respectful towards the furries. Many furs (especially in the US) tend to be rather defensive of themselves. I will laugh at myself with just as much vigour as the rest of the world laughing at me, but it's best to play it safe with furs you don't know and not be critical.
