For decorative purposes, gold plating can make a piece lovelier or more visually appealing, thus they would bring a higher price if sold.
Sometimes a gold wash is added to a silver item to protect the silver from something that would stain or corrode the silver, such as the inside of a vinegar cruet or a jelly spoon. The acids in the vinegar or jelly could mar the silver.
Other times gold plating is added to make the food inside more appealing, such as the gold plating inside some creamers in tea sets. Cream inside silver takes on a grayish color that looks unappetizing, but a gold wash or plating inside a creamer makes the cream look golden and creamy.
