All M3 's burn some oil. That's simply the nature of a hand built race engine. Expect to burn about a quart every 5K miles of fairly hard driving. More than this would be unusual.

As an engine gets older, scratches and pots in the cylinder walls can form if it is not taken care of properly and allow oil into the comustion chamber on the down stroke, thus causing oil burn. If an old engine is burning oil, this is likely the case. (or it could be a worn head gasket) So, noramly a little is expected, but more than half a quart being burnt every 3000 miles is excessive.
