There is no particular number. However, some who have skin cancer--melanoma in particular-- remember one very extreme burn. If you have very fair skin, you should definitely always use sun screen and cover up. Even if you tend to tan without a burn, the sun damage can occur. Often the sun damage doesn't show up until you are in middle age. Then, it is a constant issue to have pre-cancerous spots removed. Face, ears, neck and arms/hands are the most exposed areas.

The exposure time depends on your skin color and the intensity of the Sun's radiation (which varies by location, time of year, and amount of cloud cover). Unprotected skin can get a sunburn in as little as 10 to 15 minutes under some conditions. It is caused by one range of ultraviolet (UV) radiation called UV-B, which even penetrates cloud cover to some extent.

Sunburn and cancer are not directly connected but overexposure to the sun can result in a melanoma. This usually starts as an irregular mole with a mottled surface and ragged edges. Any unusual mole should be checked by a medic. Always use a high factor suntan lotion and avoid sunbathing around midday.

Not guaranteed that you will, but in general, skin cancer is caused by repeated skin damage from ultraviolet light, and the most obvious source of that is the sun. The more you tan or burn your skin, the higher your risk of skin cancer.

You can get it all of your life. New ones come and they are cut, frozen, or burned off. This is why every year a skin check is needed by a doctor, that you don't lay out in the sun, that you wear hats, and sunscreens. The damage to skin stays and as you age the cancer shows up. If you get early enough there is no problem, but if you let it go it does into the body and will kill you.

Getting one sunburn may not lead to skin cancer. Multiple sunburns though have been shown to double a person's chances of getting skin cancer. It would be best to use sun screen to prevent sunbuns.
