So many people condemn those who are beaten, saying they "deserve" it and "brought it on themselves". I've been told -- by the police, no less -- that I earned the beatings I got because I was just a rotten person. I am not a good person, I know; but I do not beat people.
I've been beaten by narcissists and alcoholics. But I am the sociopath.
I spent some of the Summer of 2005 living in a shelter for battered women, and saw things that corroborated with what I'd read; because of my own experience, though, it wasn't surprising. I'd kind of expected it. The woman I now call my landlady, who is 43, is a soft, gentle person who has been horribly abused and still sees the good in people. I do not know how she can be so restrained!
Or, I guess I do know...I know what she has and I haven't. She has a conscience, and she has incredible empathy.

That's being a sociopath. Sociopaths have no remorse or empathy for another person. They care only for the end result they want, and that is a satisfied thirst for revenge or to hurt someone.
