The Mona Lisa painting does seem to resemble some other self portraits Leonardo made, but is more widely believed to be the portrait of a Florentine citizen's young third wife, Lisa Gherardini Giocondo. There is no historical proof of the subject's identity, however, so the theory remains that the Mona Lisa was a feminized portrait of himself. This is unproven.
