A simple single-phase installation for an average European house has a supply provided on two wires, the live and the neutral, with a nominal voltage of 230 v. Single phase supplies are usually rated at 60 or 100 amps.

In countries which use 120 v appliances the property is usually supplied with a split single-phase system on three wires, with one neutral and two lives. The voltage across the live wires is 240 v for high-power appliances, while neutral to either live wire is 120 v for lighting and low-power devices.

The common European three-phase system has one neutral and three live wires with 230 v between neutral and each live wire, but 400 v between live wires. Groups of houses and other small properties have a three-phase supply, with each property connected through a single-phase spur using one live wire and neutral.

Large houses and small businesses might each have their own three-phase four-wire supply.
