For many Christians, the reason for leading an ethical life is not principally because we simply should do so but because this brings a reward in the afterlife. Of course, not all Christians follow high moral values merely for the reward that they believe follows, but nevertheless are confident of their reward in the afterlife. It is Christian eschatology that tells us of heaven, hell and the Last Judgement, and gives us hope for eternal life and thus reason to do good works and to avoid wrongdoing.
