Biofuels are beneficial because they do not add carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere. They do release carbon dioxide when burnt, but it is carbon dioxide that was recently removed from the atmosphere when the vegetation was growing (bio-fuels are produced from various kinds of vegetation).

The carbon dioxide emitted by fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) has been hidden away for millions of years, which is why releasing it now is increasing the greenhouse effect, causing global warming and climate change.
