Satellites can be loaded with a number of remote sensing systems to measure aspects of the Earth such as temperature, atmospheric composition and distance to surface as well as photograph areas such as deserts and the polar ice fields. This data is transmitted to Earth for analysis and to develop long term data bases to demonstrate change.
