It's called the Lost City of the Incas because it was built before Spanish arrived, probably when the Inca civilization was at its peak. The mecca was abandoned at one point but also remained "undiscovered" until 1911. It's the most intact representation of the civilization. At many other Inca sites things were destroyed or defaced during Spanish colonization or over time. Machu Picchu was basically preserved for a few hundred years by the overgrowing jungle that hid it.
