The best way to improve hybrids is to develop better battery technology. Better batteries will make it possible for a hybrid to drive farther without requiring the engine to recharge them. Higher efficiency batteries will also be able to put out more energy, which will enable the electric drive-train to operate at higher speeds and under heavier loads (current hybrid vehicles use the engine to move the car while accelerating and above certain speeds).
