For an Individual to have AIDS you have to start by having HIV. Thus an Individual can get AIDS if he/she does not get a treatment ofAntiretroviral drugs when his/her immune system has gone down to 350 or below. Also if the individual is taking the wrong combination of drugs or has developed resistance which is specially caused by non adherence or acquiring another strain or subtype. So HIV if not treated, it developes to AIDS, but nowadays due to research there are Highly Active antiretrovirals to suppress the HIV so it doesn't develop to AIDS.
